How to Make Decorating Clay

How to Use Decorating Clay

Yield: each ingredient set makes about 3 cups of decorating clay. Store left-over clay in a sealed container for later use.

Bright, Flavored Decorating Clay
Use food dyes and extracts to make any color and flavor.

Ingredients:
- 1 pound powdered sugar
- 175 grams vegetable shortening
- 3/4 cup flour
- 2 tablespoons canola oil
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- About 1/2 teaspoon flavor extract (e.g., strawberry, orange, banana, mint, coconut)
- About 1/2 teaspoon gel food dye

Peanut-Butter Decorating Clay
Makes a tan (skin tone), delicious, peanut-butter decorating clay.

Ingredients:
- 1 pound powdered sugar
- 85 grams vegetable shortening
- 85 grams smooth peanut butter
- 1/2 cup flour
- 5 tablespoons canola oil
- 1/2 teaspoon salt

Chocolate Decorating Clay
Makes a dark brown, delicious, chocolately decorating clay.

Ingredients:
- 1 pound powdered sugar
- 175 grams vegetable shortening
- 1/2 cup flour
- 1/2 cup cocoa powder
- 2 tablespoons canola oil
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon butter extract (optional)

Universal Directions:
Combine all ingredients in a heavy-duty stand mixer. Place top covers on your mixer if you have them. Mix at the slowest speed for two minutes. Very gradually increase the speed to a medium-high setting. The decorating clay will begin to clump together. When it has formed into one large unit and is no longer sticking to the sides of the bowl, turn off the mixer. If the decorating clay is too sticky, add slightly more powdered sugar. If the decorating clay is too dry, add a few more drops of oil. If making the bright, flavored decorating clay, add more flavor extract and/or food dye if desired and mix the decorating clay again.

Using decorating clay is easy - just make it into any shape you'd like, and place your personalized decorations on your dessert. You can freely form the shapes. Or use cookie cutters or clean playdough toys to make fun shapes. If you find that the clay is sticking to your hands, cookie cutters or toys, just add in a little bit of powdered sugar. Children will love to help with these decorations. See the photo gallery below for ideas of decorations to make with decorating clay. Have fun!
